Oral disease is the most frequently diagnosed health problem for pets

• An astounding 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs of oral disease by age 3, according to the American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS).
• Many owners think their pet’s bad breath is natural or pass it off as “something they ate”. What they may not know is that persistent bad breath can be a sign of serious health issues, including periodontal disease and infection.
• Periodontal disease is a common problem in dogs, particularly smaller breeds.
• Cats can develop painful resorptive lesions. Studies show that about 28 percent of domestic cats develop at least one of these painful lesions during their lifetime.

From September 15th – October 31st 2011, we are focusing our efforts on helping you care for your pet’s teeth! As always, we are offering FREE Dental Checkups, where we can evaluate your pet’s teeth to see if they have infection that needs to be removed through a thorough cleaning, discuss how to start a home dental care routine for your pet to help prevent infection, and discuss the different products available to care for your pet’s teeth. If we feel your pet has infection that needs to be removed, we can customize a treatment plan so you know what the costs will be to have the teeth cleaned to remove the infection!

This September 15th – October 31st 2011, we are also doing something a little extra than we normally do. We are offering 15% off a complete dental cleaning, instead of the usual 10% off in February! We know times have been tough for everyone so we are offering a little extra savings. The complete cleaning includes a pre-dental exam the day of the cleaning, pre-operative blood work to check your pet’s liver, kidneys, red blood cells and white blood cells, general anesthesia, ultrasonic cleaning to remove the infection from the teeth, polishing, and a fluoride treatment. If your pet needs teeth removed, antibiotics, or pain medication, you will receive 15% off those as well.

If you’ve been trying to wait on getting those teeth cleaned, wait no more! This is the time to do it! Need to make payments on your pet’s teeth cleaning? We accept Care Credit and they have 6 month and 12 month no interest payment options. You can apply in hospital or online at Care Credit. Call us for more details!

Call us to schedule your pet’s FREE Dental Check-up or Complete Dental Cleaning and infection removal today at 928-757-7979! Be sure to tell your friends and family about this great savings as they can take advantage of it for their pets too!

Did you know that the American Association of Feline Practitioners recommend that cats be examined at least once a year? Bringing your cat in for an exam will allow us to detect subtle signs of illness which could prevent them from staying healthy and living a long life!

Cats are excellent at hiding illness and you may not notice the signs of a health problem until it has reached an advanced stage. Prevention is preferable to treatment and detecting a problem early can spare your cat from needless suffering and spare you some expense! If your kitty lives indoors, they can still be at risk for health problems and the older that a cat gets, the greater their risk becomes for certain age related illnesses, making prevention and early intervention especially important.

Call us today at 928-757-7979 and schedule your cat for a complete physical examination. Be sure to mention this article when you call and we will give you 15% off your cat’s entire visit (food excluded). Your pet will receive a full examination where we will discuss vaccinations, diet, blood testing, review ways to keep them healthy and go over any problems or changes you may have noticed with your feline friend.

This savings is only good now through September 30th, 2011 so hurry and call today! Limit one offer per cat. We look forward to seeing you and your kitty soon!

Rattlesnake season is closely approaching. Did you know that there is a vaccination to protect your dog from the bite of the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake? There is and it works extremely well! The vaccine helps your dog to generate protective antibodies against rattlesnake venom. These protective antibodies start neutralizing venom immediately. This means that vaccinated dogs experience less pain and have a reduced risk of permanent injury from rattlesnake bite! Rattlesnake bites are still an emergency and your dog should be seen immediately, even if he or she is vaccinated but we have had dogs that have been vaccinated and have been bit and they had much less severe reactions to the bites.

During this March, we are offering $10 off your dog’s very first rattlesnake vaccination. So if your dog has never been vaccinated with the rattlesnake vaccination before, you will receive $10 off his or her first vaccination. To find out more or to schedule an appointment, call our office at 928-757-7979. If you would like to know more about the rattlesnake vaccination, you can read all about it on Red Rock Biologics’ website.

Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease, affects a staggering 1 out of 5 adult dogs and cats! Did you know that there are things you can do to relieve your best friend’s pain and discomfort? Let’s learn more about arthritis and what you can do to give your pet the relief it needs.

What causes arthritis?

Certain dogs and cats are more likely to develop osteoarthritis than others. Some of the more common things that can contribute to the development of arthritis in your pet include old age, large size, and obesity. Trauma or injury can also trigger arthritis, and certain breeds are genetically predisposed to the disease. In addition, there are inherited developmental abnormalities of the bones and joints that can lead to arthritis. Dogs that participate in excessive physical activity have a great chance of developing arthritis as well.

How do you know if your pet has arthritis?

Sometimes, it can be hard to tell if your pet is in pain. Pets are great at hiding pain and illness. The signs can be subtle and you may not even realize that they are due to your pet being in pain. If you notice any of the following changes in your pet, talk to your veterinarian to discuss whether osteoarthritis pain could be the cause:

* Difficulty climbing stairs, walking, running, or jumping

* Reluctance to play

* Lameness, limping, or moving with an altered gait

* Stiffness or slowness in rising from a resting position

* Soreness upon being touched

* Frequent yelping or whimpering or lack of vocalization

* Excessive licking of a joint or leg

* Behavioral changes such as withdrawal or aggression

* Change in normal eating habits

It’s not always easy to see that your pet is in pain due to osteoarthritis. However, it’s important for you to recognize the signs and alert your veterinarian so that arthritis can be diagnosed as soon as possible and proper treatment begun. Fortunately, early treatment of pain and inflammation can help control the progression of arthritis and allow your pet to remain comfortable longer and improve their quality of life.

How can you make your pet feel better, have less pain, and be happier?

Fortunately, there are many treatments options available to help dogs and cats with arthritis. While there is no cure for arthritis, we can help manage it with special diets, pain relieving medicines and supportive treatment.

NSAID’s – One of the mostly widely used group of medications for dogs with osteoarthritis are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, also know as NSAIDs. NSAIDs are used to relieve joint pain, inflammation, and swelling to make it easier and less painful for dogs to move. One such NSAID is METACAM. Metacam has been used for over 15 years and has helped dogs worldwide to live more comfortable lives and continue to enrich the lives of their owners. Metacam is a honey-flavored liquid that can be easily applied right on your dog’s food or administered directly into your dog’s mouth from the dispenser. One small dose of Metacam provides effective pain relief to help restore a dog’s mobility all day long. NSAIDS may not be appropriate for all dogs, so it is important to have your dog examined and evaluated first to find out if an NSAID is the right choice for your dog. NSAID’s can have side effects so baseline blood work and blood monitoring will be recommended if your dog will be on these medications for long term use. Cats are very sensitive to NSAIDs so never give your dog’s NSAID to your cat.

NSAID’s are just one part of the treatment for osteoarthritis. Your management program may include:

* Controlling your dog’s weight through diet and exercise

* Ensuring a comfortable living environment

* Performing physical therapy and massage

* Making daily activities easier and less painful

* Managing any other medical problems that exist

DIET – Another treatment option that is available for both dogs and cats with osteoarthritis is Hill’s Prescription Diet j/d mobility. j/d mobility is designed specifically to help increase your dog or cat’s mobility in as little as 21 days!
NATURAL SUPPLEMENTS or “NUTRACEUTICALS” - This is the last group and can be extremely beneficial for your dog or cat. These products can be used alone or in conjunction with diet and NSAID’s to provide your furry friend much relief. The great thing about these products are that they don’t have harmful side effects and don’t require blood monitoring with long term usage. They are non-prescription and can be a great “natural” choice for your pet.
